Utah Charter School Nurtures Entrepreneurial Spirit

A new charter school in Utah wants to equip students in kindergarten through ninth grade with a solid foundation in business.

Students' daily lessons are peppered with concepts like sales and marketing, finance and entrepreneurship, says first-grade teacher Tammy Hill. "And that plays into leadership and improved math skills. And finance plays into every part of their lives."

About 580 students attend Highmark Charter School in a suburb just north of Salt Lake City. They earn play money by turning in homework on time and performing chores.

Salt Lake County Expands Start-Up Loan Program

Salt Lake County is expanding its small business loan program with some financial backing from commercial banks. The fund supplies higher interest loans to businesses that would be otherwise ineligible for traditional bank loans.

UTA Making Route Changes in Preparation for New Airport TRAX line

The Utah Transit Authority is holding public meetings this week on several proposed route changes and reductions.

In connection with the start of service on the new Airport TRAX line in April UTA is proposing several route changes including eliminating routes in Salt Lake, Tooele, and Davis County. UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter says he thinks for the most part these changes will be well received.

The Utah Air Quality Board will meet tomorrow to look at a new set of state regulations aimed at cleaning up winter air pollution. The new rules would impose stricter standards in Cache County as well as the Wasatch Front. The new plan has to meet standards set by the U-S Environmental Protection Agency, with federal highway funding at risk if it fails.

Utah Exports Are On The Rise

Recently released data from the International Trade Administration shows that the state of Utah has significantly increased their amount of merchandise exports from last year.

Halfway through 2012, the amount of exports coming from Utah has increased by 14 percent. Six months into this year Utah has exported $9.7 billion worth of goods, compared to the $8.5 billion that was done in 2011. Lew Cramer is the CEO of the World Trade Center Utah.
