Three Dead in Midvale Shooting

Unified Police officers found three people dead this morning at a home in Midvale. Lieutenant Justin Hoyal says they’d been shot. One woman who survived was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Hoyal says they weren’t sure initially whether there was a danger to the neighborhood.

Utah Schools Last in Breakfast Program Participation

Utah has the fewest number of eligible school children eating free and reduced price breakfast each day. According to a new national report released today, Utah served about 34 low-income children breakfast for every 100 that received free or reduced price lunch during the 2011-2012 school year.

Emilie Parker Laid to Rest

Six-year-old Emilie Parker was remembered as a bright, happy child who loved to draw and who tried to be a friend to everyone at a funeral service in Ogden on Saturday. Reporters were invited to attend but not to record the service. Afterward Jill Cottle Garrett said the family chose Christmas music for the service rather than hymns more often heard at funerals.

About a thousand people gathered at Ben Lomond High School in Ogden Thursday evening for a public memorial service in honor of Emilie Parker, one of the victims of last week's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Emilie's father, Robbie Parker, spoke to the crowd of driving Emilie's younger sister around Ogden to see the thousands of pink ribbons decorating the city in memory of those who lost their lives.

Utah's New Attorney General Committed to Protecting Schools

Utah's attorney general-elect says he's heartsick about last week's school shooting in Connecticut. John Swallow tells KUER he's committed to doing everything he can to protect kids in schools, short of turning schools into prisons.

Swallow says he's already been talking to officials in other states, working on a plan to get together discuss what they can do to address mass shootings and gun violence. While he says the Constitution needs to be protected, Swallow says they need to take a close look at one area of the law.

Utah spends less per student in its public schools than any other state. Not just a little less – 15% less than Idaho, the next on the list. Utah’s been at the bottom since 1988.

There are several reasons for that last-place ranking, but the most important is the high ratio of children to adults in Utah – 20-percent more kids as a proportion of the population than most other states.

Smoke Pushes Air Pollution Levels

Smoke from distant wildfires has pushed air pollution levels well above federal health standards in Utah this week. Fine particulate pollution (PM 2.5) topped 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air on Tuesday afternoon. Schools aren't required to keep kids indoors during recess until that level reaches 90. But Doctor Michell Hofmann, a pediatrician at the University of Utah School of Medicine says school administrators and coaches need to think about how many days kids have been breathing bad air as well as just how bad it might be on a given day.
