Governor Gary Herbert demonstrated three simple things Utahns can do to help lower harmful emissions as he kicked off Clean Air Month at a house across the street from the State Capitol today.

Governor Herbert says Utahns aren’t always aware of the simple ways we can help clean up the air but gave these three tips while declaring May Clean Air Month. One could update older fuel storage containers, use paints with low amounts of volatile organic compounds, and replace gas powered yard equipment with cleaner alternatives.

Citizens Demand Action on Air Pollution

Utah citizens and activists gathered on the steps of the Capitol Wednesday to demand action to clean up the state’s polluted air. The rally was part of a grassroots effort, including a Facebook campaign and petition.

University of Utah student Carl Ingwell started the Facebook campaign, urging people to inundate the Utah governor’s office with calls and e-mails, demanding action. His campaign led him to the steps of the Capitol, speaking to about 150 concerned citizens.

Governor, Outdoor Industry Share Vision

Utah's governor has promised to create an Office of Outdoor Recreation in a vision statement that's just been released. The Outdoor Industry Association, which sponsors Utah's largest trade shows twice a year, complained last summer that Utah's state government wasn't taking outdoor recreation seriously enough and threatened to move unless the issue got some attention. So Governor Gary Herbert assigned his Balanced Resources Council to sit down with industry leaders.

Governor Herbert Inaugurated to First Full Term

A performance by the One Voice Children’s Choir helped mark the inauguration of Gary Herbert to his first full term as Governor. The ceremony also included performances from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and a 19 gun salute by the Utah National Guard. In his inaugural address Herbert refrained from making any strong political statements. Instead he urged everyone to keep pressing forward while praising the “can-do” attitude of state residents both past and present.

Governor's Budget Omits Funding for Medicaid Expansion

Some healthcare advocates were disappointed Wednesday to find out that Governor Gary Herbert did not include funding for the expansion of Medicaid in his proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Governor Herbert spoke very little about healthcare in his budget presentation except to say that he is proceeding with caution.

Utah 'Ready and Willing’ to Host Olympics Again

Hopes for another Olympics in Utah were rekindled Monday, as Governor Gary Herbert and Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker announced their decision to pursue a bid for the 2026 Winter Games.

The Olympic cauldron at Rice Eccles Stadium was literally in Governor Herbert’s view as he announced his decision based on the recommendations of an Exploratory Committee.

“We’ve reviewed the report and are here to announce that Salt Lake City and the great state of Utah are ready, willing, and able to host a future winter Olympic game.”
