About KUER
A Service of the University of Utah KUER broadcasts 24 hours a day. Our format Monday through Friday, is News-Information & Talk during the day, and Jazz music in the evenings. Weekend programming on KUER is a mix of News, Entertainment, and Jazz programming. An extensive translator network enables us to reach the vast majority of the state of Utah.
Our Mission Statement
Where the Money Comes From The remainder of our support comes from the University of Utah, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), and much smaller miscellaneous sources. See the funding charts here.
KUER's Story On June 5th, 1960 the station went live with a 250 watt signal, broadcasting the University of Utah Baccalaureate exercises. The following Monday, the station began broadcasting music, educational, and cultural programming every weekday from 3 to 9 p.m. (KUER stands for Utah Education Radio). The signal could be heard on the University campus and in parts of the Avenues neighborhood. Gene Pack was part of the daily operating crew that got it all started. KUER was a charter members of National Public Radio when it signed on with its unique radio news program All Things Considered in 1970, and picked up Morning Edition when it debuted in 1979. Over the years the station has served as a training ground for many prominent Utah figures, including Ed Yeates, Craig Wirth, Doug Wright, Spence Kinard, Alan Hague, "Country Joe" Flint, Russ Gentner, Roy Gibson, Reece Stein, Sandy Gilmour, Sydney Fonnesbeck, and Maggie St. Claire. KUER now broadcasts 24 hours a day from the wonderfully modern Eccles Broadcast Center on the University of Utah golf course. We broadcast a 35,000 watt signal from a tower on Mt.Vision to over 90,000 listeners throughout Utah and in surrounding states. KUER still serves as a training ground for University of Utah students, who perform internships, work as board operators and hosts, and learn radio production techniques in our studios.
