This I Believe is a national media project engaging millions of people in writing, sharing, and discussing the core values and beliefs that guide their lives. NPR has aired these three-minute essays on its newsmagazines since April 2005. The project is based on the popular 1950s radio series of the same name hosted by Edward R. Murrow. The SLCC Community Writing Center, in conjunction with National Public Radio and KUER, sought This I Believe submissions in the Fall of 2007. As sumbissions were received they were posted on the CWC Web Site. The essays that were selected to be read on KUER FM 90 are below. A new essay will be posted every Monday. We hope you'll read and listen to these unique perspectives on subjects such as appreciating life, overcoming adversity, parenting, and the joys of personal discovery. This I Believe Michael Denkers 5 May 2008 This morning we’d like to continue the series of essays from the Salt Lake Community Writing Center focused on the core beliefs of those who’ve contributed them. It’s modeled on the program presented by National Public Radio, which in turn was based on the 1950’s radio program This I Believe. A handful of these essays were submitted by children, and this morning we’ll hear from 13-year-old Mike Denkers, who lives in Salt Lake City. This I Believe Daniel Harnsburger 20 April 2008 For the past year or more, NPR listeners have been hearing essays modeled on Edward R. Murrow's radio program from the 1950s, "This I Believe." KUER and the Community Writing Center of Salt Lake Community College have collaborated on a similar project with people in our community who submitted their essays on-line. This I Believe Ben Phan 14 April 2008 For the past year or more, listeners to National Public Radio have been hearing essays modeled on Edward R. Murrow’s radio program from the 1950’s, "This I Believe." KUER and the Community Writing Center of Salt Lake Community College have collaborated on a similar project to let our listeners hear some of the beliefs of people in our community and around the West – people who’ve submitted their essays online. A handful of our essays are from children. This morning, we’ll hear from 10-year-old Ben Phan, who lives in Salt Lake City, about his belief that animals are worth as much as humans. This I Believe Rebecca Guevara 31 March 2008 When National Public Radio began airing essays based on the 1950's radio program This I Believe, people all over the nation responded. NPR, of course, can air only a limited number of these statements of personal values. But with the help of the Community Writing Center at Salt Lake Community College, we've been able to find many Utahns who have beliefs they'd like to express - and that are worth hearing. This morning we'll hear from businesswoman and novelist Rebecca Guevara. She lives in Salt Lake City. Rebecca Guevara is a writer and lecturer who lives in Salt Lake City. Her essay and others in our series are available on our website at KUER-dot-org. This I Believe Annabelle Numaguchi 24 March 2008 This morning we'd like to bring you the third in our series of essays based on the "This I Believe" program pioneered by Edward R. Murrow in the 1950’s. The series returned on National Public Radio, and with help from the Community Writing Center at Salt Lake Community College, we’ve solicited essays from our listeners allowing them to share their core beliefs with others here in the West. Annabelle Numaguchi lives in Moab, Utah. Her essay might be entitled, "Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff," but she puts in a much different way. This I Believe Grace Fojtik 17 March 2008 Last Monday, KUER began sharing some of the essays submitted to the This I Believe project sponsored by the Community Writing Center of Salt Lake Community College. This I Believe is modeled on the 1950’s radio program of the same name that was hosted by Edward R. Murrow. Many similar essays have been broadcast nationwide on National Public Radio. This I Believe Larry Chaston 10 March 2008 For the past year or more, listeners to National Public Radio have been hearing essays modeled on Edward R. Murrow’s radio program from the 1950’s, “This I Believe.” KUER and the Community Writing Center of Salt Lake Community College have collaborated on a similar project to let our listeners hear some of the beliefs of people in our community and around the West – people who’ve submitted their essays online and whose work we’re pleased to share with you, beginning today. The first comes from retired Sergeant Major Larry Chaston, who spent 36 years in the Utah National Guard. In 2002, he was serving in Afghanistan with an Army Special Forces unit, looking for ways to reach out to a people who have seen warlords and conquerors come and go through the centuries.
