Arts Showcase Aims to Help the Homeless in Salt Lake City

Some Salt Lake City arts companies are joining forces Saturday to put on a show that will benefit a homeless shelter.

They call it The Rose Exposed. All six arts groups involved are based at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. Linda Smith is artistic director for the Repertory Dance Theatre, and she’s hoping the show will raise awareness about what goes on at the Rose, and build relationships with people in the community.

“I think it’s a wonderful way to get in touch with not just what we’re doing, but what’s happening in our neighborhood,” Smith says.

All the proceeds from the 25-dollar tickets will go directly to The Road Home, a shelter and resource center for the homeless, located just a few blocks from the Arts Center.  The companies will employ music, dance, and theater to create new works around the theme of "home", preparing their performances in just one day.

“This project serves the arts groups, as well as one of our very good neighbors, as well as the audience, so there is going to be some consciousness raising I think, on everyone’s part,” Smith says. “I think it’s going to be a great deal of fun!”

The public is invited to watch the process in action throughout the day Saturday. The Rose Wagner Performance Arts Center will be open to the public from 9am to 5pm for open rehearsals. The final performance will be at 8 o’clock.
