The Intercept: Toxic Sprays Sickened USDA Inspectors At Central Utah Turkey Plant

Google Maps, Moroni, Utah

Central Utah’s Sanpete County is an agricultural hub, home to hundreds of thousands of turkeys that are sent for processing to a nearby facility. "The turkey plant," as it’s locally referred to in Moroni, has been one of the area’s largest employers since the 1970s. But as Eyal Press, a freelance reporter writing for The Intercept, finds people at the plant are getting sick.  Two whistleblowers who were USDA inspectors working at the plant recently shared their story with Press.

KUER's Bob Nelson, who grew up in nearby Mt. Pleasant, talked with the journalist about what he learned. Read the full story at The Intercept.

Bob Nelson is a graduate of the University of Utah with a BA in mass communications. He began his radio career at KUER in 1978 when it was still in Kingsbury Hall. That’s also where he met his wife, Maria Shilaos, in 1981. Bob left KUER for commercial radio where he worked for 25 years, and he is thrilled to be back at KUER. Bob and his family are part of an explorer group, fondly known as The Hordes and Masses, which has been seeking out ghost towns and little-known places in Utah for more than twenty years.
