A Utah nurse is charged with negligent homicide in the death of a 21-year-old inmate at the Duchesne County Jail.
State prosecutors say 50-year-old Jana Clyde, the on-call medical staff at the jail, did not provide intervention or follow-up care to Madison Jensen, who was withdrawing from heroin.
Charging documents show although Jensen was vomiting and had diarrhea, Clyde took no action to address the condition.
Jensen’s parents called sheriff’s deputies to their home because she was suicidal and behaving erratically. Jensen’s father, Jared, said he trusted his daughter would be in good care.
“We’ll never feel better having another person in trouble," he said. "But the simple fact that somebody could disregard someone begging for their life to be helped, I think the word would be 'satisfied' that something has happened.”
Jensen died on Dec. 1, 2016 as a result of complications from an opiate withdrawal. Jensen’s autopsy report shows she lost at least 17 pounds in the four days she was incarcerated.
