Utah Islamic Center Offering Course on Islamic Basics

The course is meant for new converts to Islam, who might not have learned basic things—like praying in Arabic, or proper conduct in a mosque. Imam Shuaib Din is teaching the class. And he’s also inviting non-Muslims to attend and learn more.

Recent violence around the world related to some Islamic groups has provoked some negative views of the faith. Din believes his course has the potential to show non-Muslims that his faith is centered in promoting peace.

“During the course of the class, if we reiterate that Islam is a peaceful religion, and they walk away with that message—you know, then all the better,” says Din.

Din also sees it as the responsibility of institutions like the Islamic Center to promote that message.

“Of course, I think every Islamic Center in America needs to make their stance very clear that the Koran or the religion does not condone violence in any form,” he says.

The class begins this week at the Utah Islamic Center. It’s free and open to the public.
