Utah Department of Workforce Services November job numbers out Friday show 8 of 10 private sector industry groups added workers compared to last year. Utah’s nonfarm payroll employment grew by an estimated 3.6%. Carrie Mayne is the department’s chief economist. She says there were two slumping sectors - Oil, Mining and Gas, as well as some services including auto repair and cosmetic salons.
“Generally speaking, the other 8 industries are growing very well; a lot of growth for quite some time in leisure and hospitality. Education and health services;” says Mayne, “that also continued to expand. And we have construction doing very well.”
Mayne says the information sector in Utah had the single most growth year-over-year at 7.6%.
“We hear a lot from our employers about need for people who can code. Those are potential opportunities for those job seekers,” Mayne says.
November’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped 0.1 percentage point from last month to 3.5%. The national unemployment rate of 5% was unchanged from October.
