Voters Face Long Lines At Polls Amid Record Midterm Election Turnout

Voters waited for hours to cast their ballots at Orem City Hall on election day. Voters reported long lines at polling locations around the state.

Some voters in Utah and Salt Lake Counties are facing long lines at polling places this evening.

At Lehi City Hall, wait times stretched to nearly two hours with lines extending out the door.  Poll workers were urging voters who had mail-in ballots at home to fill them out and bring them back to the polling place to cut down on wait times.

Sarah Penner was outside, waiting in line to cast her ballot, with a blanket wrapped around her.

“We’re having a great time. We’re meeting a lot of people here, we’re all laughing, we’re all freezing, but we’re all enjoying it.” Penner said. “I tried to bribe somebody with $100 to go in because I have a lash appointment, but it looks like I’m going to lose it.”

Penner said she loves President Trump and planned to vote straight-ticket Republican.  She also said she would support Proposition 2, which would broaden access to medical marijuana.

Voters at Orem City Hall wrapped around the corridors, with some people reporting that they’d too waited for more than two hours to cast their ballot.

Lines in Salt Lake City were out the doors at some polling places, but voters reported shorter wait times.

The ACLU sent out tweets reminding voters that as long as they are in line by 8 p.m. when the polls close they can still cast their ballot.
