At the annual state GOP convention, delegates vote to keep the current nominating system, the party elects a new chair, and Mia Love officially declares she’s ready for a rematch with Congressman Jim Matheson.

Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz called for a piecemeal approach to immigration reform while speaking at the Hinckley Institute of Politics today. He says if you want to solve the overall problem you have to start by fixing legal immigration.

“You never ever solve this problem unless you fix legal immigration," he says. "I don’t care how big, far, wide your fence is, if you don’t fix legal immigration you never solve the problem.”

The Utah Republican party is welcoming former Democratic state representative Christine Watkins with open arms after her recent decision to join the GOP. Watkins, who has served her district near Price for four years, was considered a conservative democrat in the legislature and often sided with Republicans on issues like energy development. Utah Republican Party Chairman Thomas Wright says those shared values are some of the reasons why Watkins decided to make the switch.

Saratoga Springs Mayor and Utah Congressional Candidate Mia Love took the stage last night at the GOP National Convention.

A video montage showcasing Love as a mayor and mother preceded her speech. Her speech was brief. Love spoke for just under four minutes, but she quickly invoked the story of her Haitian immigrant parents and what they taught her about American values.

"So the America I grew up knowing was centered in self-reliance and filled with the possibilities of living the American dream," she says.
