Senator Orrin Hatch on Tuesday filed 24 amendments to the comprehensive immigration bill put forward by a group of Senators known as the Gang of 8. Hatch’s amendments focus on law enforcement, high-skilled work, health benefits, and back taxes. 

Speaking in Salt Lake City last week, Hatch told KUER the immigration bill would substantially improve border security, but he said there’s more work to be done. 

Senator Orrin Hatch spoke about immigration reform in Salt Lake City Wednesday at a Zions Bank client event. He praised the 844-page comprehensive legislation put forward by the group of Senators known as the Gang of 8, but stopped short of supporting it.

Utah Senator Orrin Hatch visited state representatives in the House Wednesday to deliver what he called unhappy news. He says the Sequester, the automatic across-the-board spending cuts, will happen and it will be a difficult thing, especially for civilian employees at Hill Air Force Base.

”and it’s certainly going to hit a lot of small contractors and it’s also going to hit our workforce up there, is about two thirds civilian. So if you can imagine we’ve got to be prepared for whatever comes,”says Hatch. 

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Scott Howell vowed his support for the American military Wednesday saying the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan is long overdue.

Howell pointed to the cost of the war in Afghanistan, both in American lives and in money, as he vowed to make sure all troops are withdrawn from the country as soon as possible. Howell even criticized President Barack Obama’s lack of action.

Senator Orrin Hatch was absent from last night’s U.S. Senate Debate in Bountiful, where Democratic Candidate Scott Howell challenged the 36 year incumbent to defend his record.

Howell, Independent Senate Candidate Bill Barron, Constitution party candidate Shaun McCausland debated social security reform, the nation’s debt ceiling and a constitutional amendment requiring congress to pass a budget, and trade. McCausland argued the U.S. can easily avoid outsourcing jobs caused by free trade policies.

Republican leaders in Utah were uniformly critical of Thursday's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, saying it threatens the nation's economic recovery and could sharpen the partisan divide.  

In his monthly news conference on KUED, Utah Governor Gary Herbert said, "This has divided the country terribly and taken our eye off the ball on economic recovery.  I do believe, if you want to repeal Obamacare, you need to repeal Obama."

Senator Orrin Hatch won the Utah Republican primary, and spent 10 million dollars in the process.  Now, Democratic challenger Scott Howell aims to turn that money against the incumbent Senator.   Howell says Hatch’s significant campaign war chest is not a problem for him.  It’s a problem for the people of Utah. 

“When you see that big money, that drives the behavior that we’ve seen in Washington DC, that gives loopholes to businesses and industries that have access that you and I don’t,” said Howell, “We’re going to end that in this campaign.”
