A Utah school safety commission formed to address school violence is suggesting expanded mental health services for high risk students and other recommendations ahead of next year’s legislative session.

After the latest school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas, everything is on the table when it comes to reducing gun violence in Utah, Gov. Gary Herbert said Thursday.

Thousands of Utahns, outraged by recent school shootings, gathered at the state Capitol on Saturday as part of the nationwide March For Our Lives movement. A smaller group of gun rights advocates also made their views known in a counter-protest earlier in the day.

On a day of nationwide student-led protests for gun control, many counter-demonstrations took place across the country as well, including Utah, where gun advocates held a rally called "March Before Our Lives."

This Saturday the nationwide March For Our Lives will take place in cities across the country, including Salt Lake City. Local organizers, most of them teenagers, said they have been receiving threatening messages leading up to the event. A pro-gun counterprotest has also been scheduled.

Hundreds of students across Utah are participating in a walkout this morning to protest gun violence. It's part of a nationwide demonstration following a deadly school shooting in Parkland, Fla., exactly one month ago. 

The father of one of the Parkland Florida shooting victims, Ryan Petty, was at the Utah Capitol today. The legislature voted unanimously to make April “kindness month” in honor of the 17 victims, including Petty’s daughter.

As students across the country continue to speak out about gun violence and safety, some schools are trying to listen. That includes the superintendent and district administrators from Salt Lake City schools.

President Donald Trump is considering easing restrictions so that teachers can be armed to prevent school shootings. It’s a idea that already has traction in several Mountain West states, including Utah.

A bill that would ban teachers from using physical force to stop a student from damaging school property passed out of a house committee Monday. But the legislation may not make it to the Senate before the session ends on Thursday.
