Salt Lake City, UT – Tuesday on RadioWest, we're talking about one of the world's great rivers, the Mekong, which makes its way some three thousand miles from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea in Asia. Our guide is Mick O'Shea, a man who has been captivated by the Mekong for much of his life. A few years ago O'Shea became the first person to navigate the entire river. He did most of it alone and in a kayak. O'Shea is in Utah today to screen the film he made of his adventure and to raise awareness about the threat on the entire Mekong Basin posed by a Chinese dam project. O'Shea says it's one of the most significant ecological crises of the Mekong's fifty million year history, and few are aware of the stakes.

Mick O'Shea will be at the Salt Lake City Library this evening for a fundraiser and free screening of his film "Exploring the Mother of Waters."
  • The fundraiser for the Mekong Descent Foundation will be held in the Library Board Room from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $50 and available by phone at 801-355-6555 or by e-mail team@snowlion.com
  • At 7:30 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Library, Snow Lion and the Salt Lake City Film Center will host a free screening of O'Shea's film, which screened this weekend at the 2007 Telluride Mountain Film Festival.
