10/1/08: Composer Harry Partch
By Doug Fabrizio
Salt Lake City, UT – The composer Harry Partch wrote that "traditions in the creative arts are per se suspect." Partch, who died in 1974, spent his artistic life challenging musical convention. He experimented with scales and tones to the point he had to invent new instruments to accommodate them. Wednesday we're joined in studio by musician John Schneider, who'll bring along the 44-stringed "harmonic cannon." Biographer Bob Gilmore will also be with us as we explore the life and works of Harry Partch.
Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., John Schneider will give a free lecture and demonstration on the work of Harry Partch. The event will be held at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. Schneider is in Salt Lake City as a guest of Repertory Dance Theatre and will provide live accompaniment as part of their concert this weekend.
