3/10/11: Preparing for Utah's "Big One"

By Doug Fabrizio

Salt Lake City, Utah – There's geologic evidence of 6.5 and greater earthquakes violently shaking our region. Seismologists say it will happen again in Utah, though it's difficult to say when. We do know that there could be devastating consequences for the urban landscape. As the saying goes, "Earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do." Thursday, we're talking about what scientists are learning about earthquakes, what one would mean for the Wasatch Front and what is being done to prepare our community.

  • BeReadyUtah.gov offers Earthquake Preparedness information and a downloadable booklet Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country - Your handbook for earthquakes in Utah
  • Get an Earthquake Safety Checklist from the American Red Cross
  • On Saturday, April 9, the Utah Heritage Foundation is offering a free workshop on retrofitting historic homes for seismic events. If you'd like to learn more, visit them here
