Technology enables "Smart Mobs"
By Dan Bammes
Salt Lake City, UT – Mobile phones, text messages and Internet web logs aren't just novelties -- they're catalysts for group action. That's the thesis of Howard Rheingold's book "Smart Mobs," published in 2002. The recent violence in France is one example -- but so is the "People Power" revolution that brought down the president of the Phillipines. Rheingold was on the University of Utah campus to speak at the Siciliano Forum sponsored by the College of Social and Behavioral Science. He stopped by the KUER studio to talk with Dan Bammes about how new technologies facilitate group action and consciousness in ways that have never happened before.
