Utah Combats "Silent Epidemic" of Teen Suicide

By Tasha Cook

Salt Lake City, UT – State officials call it the "silent epidemic". They're talking about teen suicide. Utah's overall suicide rate is the 10th highest in the nation. It's become a public health crisis but mental health advocates and medical researchers here are mobilizing. State leaders announced this month the launch of a new school-based program focused on the warning signs for teen suicide. The hope is to reach troubled youth before it's too late. In the first of a three-part series on teen suicide, KUER's Tasha Cook tells the story of a young Utah family's struggle to cope.
