Salt Lake City, UT – Violent animal rights activists are increasingly being targeted by federal prosecutors for harsh sentences and massive fines. This spring, activists in New Jersey were the first Americans tried in federal court under the Animal Rights Enterprise Protection Act. Had the act been in place a decade ago, some Utah activists might still be in prison. In the late 90's, Utah experienced a rash of violent animal rights actions, including the bombing of a mink farm and the torching of a McDonald's restaurant in South Jordan. Producer Duncan Moench has this profile of a Utah man who helped burn down that McDonalds nearly a decade later.
