UTA Makes Changes for New FrontRunner Line

In anticipation of the new FrontRunner commuter rail line Utah Transit Authority is proposing a number of changes that will mostly affect riders in Utah County.

UTA Spokesman Gerry Carpenter says all bus routes in Utah County will be affected in some way by proposed changes. He says the express bus route between Salt Lake and Utah Counties will be replaced with the new FrontRunner commuter rail and that will change local bus routes.

“But ultimately we’ll be increasing the total bus service in Utah County by about 17 percent," Carpenter says. "So in all there will be a much more transit service in Utah County then there is currently.”

He says these changes will mean extra travel time for some riders though, because express buses historically have picked up passengers at a lot and delivered them to their destination.

“We’re still going to be picking people up at park and ride lots," Carpenter says. "But at the other end they will need to walk or bike or take another bus connection from the commuter rail station in Salt Lake to their place of business or wherever they’re trying to get.”

Carpenter says a new commuter rail station on North Temple will make transferring to downtown locations easier. Some Salt Lake City bus routes will change to accommodate that new station. UTA is taking public comment through the end of August. A final plan will be rolled out in the fall and FrontRunner commuter rail to Provo will begin service on Monday, Dec. 10th.
