Pro-Gun Groups Planning Three Rallies In Utah This Weekend

Across the country on Saturday, pro-gun groups will rally in support of the Second Amendment. There are demonstrations planned in three Utah cities.

A group called Students for Liberty said in a news release Thursday that rallies are planned at the state Capitol in Salt Lake City and in Orem and Cedar City in Southern Utah. They'll feature speeches by gun advocates and firearms instructors.

The national rallies are in response to students around the country pushing for gun control. Hunter High School sophomore Collin Thorup said he’ll be at the Salt Lake City rally to advocate for the Second Amendment.

Thorup said just like the teenagers from Parkland, Florida, he wants to end school shootings. He just disagrees with them on how to do it.

His solution: letting teachers who want to carry firearms in schools do so.

Teachers can already legally have concealed weapons in Utah schools. But Thorup doesn’t think it should be mandatory.

“If a teacher doesn’t want to carry, I don’t want to give them a gun and then expect them to have that responsibility,” he said.

He also does not want to see armed guards at schools.

“Schools already look and feel like prisons,” he said. “If we have guards everywhere, it kind of makes it feel more like a prison.”

The Utah rallies are planned in Orem, Cedar City, and at the State Capitol in Salt Lake City. They’ll feature speeches by firearms instructors and gun advocates.
