Lee Joins Senators Paul and Cruz Threatening Block of Gun Control Legislation

Office of Senator Mike Lee.

Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee has joined two other lawmakers who say they will block any legislation dealing with gun control.

Lee, along with fellow Republicans Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas delivered a letter to Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Tuesday saying they will actively oppose any bill or bills they would restrict gun ownership.  The U.S. Senate is currently in recess, but when the body returns Reid is expected to bring gun control legislation to the floor that would expand background checks on gun sales and crack down on gun trafficking between states.   The three senators did not use the word filibuster in the letter they sent to the Majority Leader, but the language  indicates that they would employ that privilege to keep any gun control bills from moving forward to a final vote.  Senator Lee was not available for comment, but in a statement to KUER he said:

“The government has no right to monitor or track Americans in the exercise of their constitutionally guaranteed rights.  That’s the fundamental principle we are attempting to defend.”

Lee recently participated in a 13 hour filibuster led by Kentucky’s Rand Paul in protest over the Obama Administration’s policies concerning the use of un-manned drones in combat.
