Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz told members of the Utah Legislature to be prepared for an imminent cyber-attack during remarks made in both the House and Senate chambers Friday.
Republican Representative Jason Chaffetz says the future of economic development in Utah depends on the growth of high tech companies but with that comes the increased threat of cyber-attacks. He also stressed the importance of being prepared for such an attack telling legislators it’s not a matter if, but when.
“From financial institutions to government institutions to the power grid and others, I cannot implore upon you, I cannot stress enough the importance of making sure that we are doing the hygiene that we need on our computers and that we are preparing for those catastrophic events,” he says.
He also says he will be working on legislation to help open up more of Utah’s public lands to energy development. But he says that doesn’t mean he wants to trash Utah’s public lands.
“We can have both," he says. "We can protect the great outdoor recreation opportunities and the beauty of our state and at the same time we can engage in energy development.”
Chaffetz, however, was not able to answer some legislators’ questions regarding the timeline for a balanced federal budget. He says he’s just as frustrated as they are with the lack of action.
