A 23-year-old man from Salt Lake City is dead after he was hit by a commuter train during a mass bicycle ride.

Utah Transit Authority spokesman Carl Arky said the cyclist was one of a large group trying to cross the tracks in Salt Lake ahead of a FrontRunner train.

He said one train had already passed, but a second was on its way when the crowd from the group called the 999 Ride tried to cross.

Arky said the train was going about 45 mph (72 kmh) and the engineer was blowing its horn, but it could not stop in time. The other riders made it across safely.

The 999 is an informal gathering of cyclists that meets at 9 p.m. on Thursdays at the intersection of 900 S and 900 E in Salt Lake according to the group's Facebook page.

A statement has not yet been made by the group on social media.
