Health Officials Looking for Source of Oil Sheen on Mill Creek

A section of Millcreek where an oily sheen began flowing out of the storm drain Friday morning.

Health officials in Salt Lake County probably won’t know until Saturday what’s causing an oily sheen on  Mill Creek.

South Salt Lake and Unified Fire crews responded early Friday morning to reports of a sheen where the creek flows from a storm drain on the corner of 3300 south and 700 east.

John Hoggan is an emergency response coordinator with the Salt Lake County Health Department.  He says there’s no immediate danger to people or animals.

“Haven’t been any indicators that would suggest its causing harm or potential harm anywhere,” he says.

Hoggan says they haven’t found any dead animals or received complaints of strange smells.

Several oil booms are in place to catch the material.  Hoggan says they’ll remain in place at least through the weekend.
