Medical marijuana for the terminally ill, over-the-counter birth control and legal protection to breastfeed in public. Those are just a few of over 400 new laws passed during the 2018 legislative session that take effect on Tuesday.
Among the laws that go into effect this week: Law enforcement agencies will be prohibited from imposing quotas on officers to make arrests or give tickets and restaurants will no longer be required to post signs that state ‘This premise is licensed as a restaurant, not a bar’. However, bars will still have to post a 21-year age requirement.
Laws that will take effect this week but roll out more slowly include a proposal to expand Medicaid health insurance and access to medical cannabis for the terminally ill. Also on the way: Hormonal birth control pills will be available for purchase from a pharmacist without a doctor’s prescription.
Tuesday marks 60 days from the end of the 2018 legislative session. That’s the constitutional effective date for laws passed during the session.
