New Washington County Lawmaker Sworn In; Replaces Legislator Snagged in Call-Girl Scandal

Feb 14, 2018

A new lawmaker joined the Utah House of Representatives Wednesday, St. George attorney Travis Seegmiller.

Seegmiller replaces Jon Stanard, who resigned abruptly last week after a British tabloid reported he’d paid for sex with a prostitute while in Salt Lake City on legislative business. Southwestern Utah GOP delegates held a special election Monday to replace him.

Speaker Greg Hughes announced that Seegmiller had been sworn in.

“And we’d like to welcome him,” said Hughes, “and if we can all give him a round of applause and wish him good luck.”

Seegmiller is a lawyer and associate professor at Dixie State University. He’s also worked on presidential campaigns, as an aide to Mitt Romney and as a committee staffer for U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch. He has already been assigned to two House committees — Business and Labor and Government Operations and the Social Services Appropriations Subcommittee.
