Nurse Wubbels Awarded $500K Settlement From SLCPD And University

Nurse Alex Wubbles, and attorneys J.D. Lauritzen, Karra Porter and Bill Hansen spoke at the Salt Lake City Police Department on Tuesday.

University of Utah nurse Alex Wubbels whose aggressive arrest by a Salt Lake City police officer went viral in late August reached a settlement with law enforcement yesterday.

In the settlement Wubbels was awarded $500,000. It came from the Salt Lake City Police Department and the university, which had officers on site during her arrest.

Wubbels says she’ll now use some of that money to create a legal fund to help Utahns get access to bodycam footage they’re involved in.

"No matter how truthful I was in telling my story, it was nothing compared to what people saw and the visceral reaction people experienced when watching the footage of the experience I went through," Wubbels says.

Wubbels’ attorney Karra Porter says the donation will allow her firm to provide legal services to help Utahns get that footage and pay for its cost.

"Thanks to Alex there will be more transparency as bodycam footage becomes more readily available in Utah," Porter says.

Porter says they’ll be releasing a website to find that information Thursday.
