The president’s executive action temporarily shields certain undocumented immigrants from deportation. The lawsuit filed by more than a dozen states claims that President Obama exceeded his Constitutional
authority by acting without Congressional approval.
Attorney General Reyes said in a statement that, “This lawsuit is not about immigration policy. Whether you agree or disagree with some, all or none of the president’s proposal is not the point. The process is what is being challenged.”
Utah Democratic Party Chair Peter Corroon says Reyes can’t attack the process and ignore the need for immigration reform.
“I think he’s trying to play to the conservatives of Utah, and also try to play to the Hispanic community by saying, well, it’s not about the policy—it’s just about the law,” says Corroon. “Clearly what the President’s done is legal. So we’re joining another frivolous lawsuit.”
The lawsuit against President Obama was originally filed by Texas Attorney General and Governor-Elect Greg Abbot.
