Utah’s 2nd District Congressman Chris Stewart will get another term. He beat his Democratic opponent Luz Robles easily. In his victory speech, Stewart declared it a good night for the United States of America.

“Tonight, we get to start the fight,” he said. “We get to start the fight to reclaim our country once again.”

As he begins his second term, Stewart pledged to work with others to secure the country’s borders, create jobs, improve the economy, reform taxes and entitlements, and work for energy independence. He thanked the supporters who helped re-elect him and he thanked his Democratic opponent Luz Robles.

Over at Democratic headquarters, Robles told KUER she knew the 2nd District would be a challenge because of its size and demographics. Robles emphasized in her campaign that she wanted to represent the working people, but now she’s not sure if that’s possible.

“Just the financing of something like this, it’s monumental,” Robles said. “Really it’s telling about how working Americans can’t run for Congress. You have to almost give up any income to dedicate yourself to a campaign, and it makes you wonder if you can have an average American be in Congress.”

Robles - a current state Senator - says she doesn’t know if she will run for Congress again in 2016. But she says it was worth it for her to be an example and encourage more people to run for office.
