Sun in the winter and summer can be a blast in Utah. Bluebird skiing in the Wasatch and hot days in Southern Utah’s red rock canyons. But a major downside to all that sun? Utah ranks first in the nation for rates of melanoma skin cancer.

Gov. Gary Herbert revealed Wednesday that he is undergoing treatment for squamous cell carcinoma, a common and treatable form of skin cancer.

Latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control show that Utah has twice as many cases of melanoma skin cancer as the national average.

The US Surgeon General issued a call to action Tuesday to prevent skin cancer.  It’s the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the country, and Utah has a higher rate of melanoma than any other state.
