An ongoing dispute over church finances brought police to Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church last Sunday.

Members of the parish council that governs both the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Salt Lake City and Prophet Elias church in Holladayhave been trying to cut expenses by letting one of the three parish priests go.  The Greek Orthodox hierarchy has told the parish that the priests’ employment is its responsibility, and that conflict has divided parish members.

The conflict got heated during a service last Sunday, January 19th.  Witnesses said there was shouting and shoving as the confrontation moved into the church foyer.  A police report says an elderly member had his tie pulled.  No one was arrested.

Each side in the dispute has sent an e-mail to members, calling on everyone to behave appropriately in church and blaming the other side for the ongoing conflict.  All of those involved say they’re waiting for guidance from the church hierarchy to help resolve it.
