Betsy Burton reviews The Various Haunts of Men (Overlook Press) by Susan Hill this week.  It’s a British mystery, the first of a series, and Betsy says it’s “heart-stopping.”

Then, Austen Diamond’s got a preview of Sara Watkins’s upcoming show in Salt Lake City.  Watkins first made her name as the fiddle player in the band Nickel Creek, alongside her brother Sean Watkins and Chris Thile.  In 2009, she released her first solo record, and she’s put out two more since then.  Sara Watkins is playing at The State Room on Monday, December 5th.

Music by Sara Watkins heard on this Books & Beats:

1: “Long Hot Summer Days”

2: “You and Me”

3: “Young in all the Wrong Ways”
