Violins Give Kids a Unique Voice

By Sara Johansen

Salt Lake City – Jackson Elementary School in Salt Lake City has one of the highest concentrations of children living in poverty of any school in Utah... and half the student body speaks a first language other than English. But these kids have an opportunity that's not available to students in wealthier schools. Every day, they play the violin. Teachers say the unique program gives the students a new, positive identity. The children have been busy this week performing at holiday gatherings. KUER intern Sara Johansen brings us this audio postcard.
