On Thursday night, a jury acquitted former Utah Attorney General John Swallow on nine counts that included charges of bribery, obstruction of justice, falsifying government documents and misuse of public funds.
Swallow and family members reportedly held back tears as the verdict was read. He told reporters outside the courtroom that he was grateful and glad the trial was over. Prosecutors accused Swallow of taking lavish gifts and large contributions in exchange for favorable treatment. Salt Lake District Attorney Sim Gill told reporters that while the verdict may be disappointing to some, it is proof that the judicial system works. Swallow resigned from his post as Attorney General in 2013. Both he and his predecessor Mark Shurtleff were indicted on corruption related charges. Charges were dropped against Shurtleff last year. Swallow did not testify at his trial, but has maintained his innocence since the day he and Shurtleff were arrested in 2014.
