KUER and PBS Utah announce RadioWest Filmmaker in Residence Position

The year-long residency will work with both public broadcasting organizations

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Monday, March 14, 2022 – KUER and PBS Utah announced today the RadioWest Filmmaker in Residence position. The selected Filmmaker in Residence will work directly with RadioWest host Doug Fabrizio, RadioWest producer Timothy Slover and the team at PBS Utah to create a short documentary each month over the course of a year. On a quarterly basis, the short films will be compiled and broadcast on PBS Utah.

Filmmakers who are interested in the residency can apply starting today.

KUER (NPR Utah) is Utah’s largest public radio station, serving over 200,000 listeners every week. For 21 years, it has been home to RadioWest, an award-winning interview show hosted by Doug Fabrizio. Fabrizio started RadioWest Films in 2013 to make space for local filmmakers and allow the RadioWest team to tell new stories in a different way.

"There are so many stories about this place that haven't been told — stories we haven't even found yet,” said Doug Fabrizio, RadioWest host and RadioWest Films executive producer. “We're really excited for this position. It will give us another dimension to the way we cover this region."

Throughout the year, the Filmmaker in Residence will produce a portfolio of short documentaries and grow the storytelling capacity of RadioWest Films. Additionally, the partnership between KUER and PBS Utah will bring RadioWest Films to a larger public media audience.

PBS Utah is Utah’s storyteller and is recognized for its award-winning, locally produced documentaries and series. As these short films become available, PBS Utah will broadcast them on air and make them available to viewers on the PBS Utah website and PBS Video App.

“I think this is an exciting opportunity for an early-career filmmaker, to be able to spend a year creating short films on a variety of topics and present them to the loyal audiences of RadioWest Films and PBS Utah, both of whom have an incredible reputation for quality in documentary storytelling,” said James Davie, PBS Utah Station Manager. “And the idea of working with an emerging talent and seeing what their unique voice brings to our platforms is incredibly exciting for us.”

RadioWest Films and PBS Utah have previously collaborated on documentary film projects with success. In the last year, the sister stations partnered to create the longform documentary, The Gerda That Remains. KUER’s RadioWest Films has also received dozens of awards for its short documentaries, including Short of the Week features, the New York Animation Film Awards, the Red Rock Film Festival, and more.

Applications for the RadioWest Filmmaker in Residence position can be submitted at utah.peopleadmin.com.
