In a statement released Thursday a spokesperson for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says an executive order signed by President Trump designated to promote religious liberty will have no sway on longstanding policy.
"We are always grateful for the efforts of leaders to safeguard religious freedom and protect the beliefs and religious exercise of all people," the statement reads. "As an institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been and remains committed to political neutrality. Today’s executive order will not affect that longstanding policy.”
The executive order promises that the executive branch of the federal government will honor and enforce all existing protections for religious liberty. President Trump has been vocal about protecting churches from losing tax-exempt status if they choose to endorse political candidates.
The order also asks government agencies to make allowances for organizations that don't want to cover birth control in employee health plans.
