Salt Lake City, UT – Selenium is a natural mineral, but it's also a byproduct of refining copper and sewage treatment. In Utah that waste is discharged into locations like the Great Salt Lake where it finds its way into crucial habitat and affects the health of birds. The Utah Division of Water Quality set out to create a new standard for selenium levels in the lake, but critics say it misses the mark and violates an international treaty created to protect migratory birds. Tuesday - Selenium and the Great Salt Lake.
