Bill Expanding Tax Credits for Electric Vehicles Moves Ahead

Nissan USA
HB 74 provides a $2500 tax credit to purchasers of electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf

A bill that would provide a 25-hundred dollar tax credit to buyers of electric vehicles won approval in a Utah House committee yesterday.  House Bill 74 makes the credit available for all-electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and plug-in hybrids like the Chevy Volt.  Brooke Scott was one of a handful of citizens who testified in favor of the bill.

“We want to do the right thing," Scott told the committee.  "We want to buy the most efficient car that we can find.  But what we’ve found is that the most efficient cars out there are good, but more expensive than their traditional counterparts.  And that’s put us in a really hard situation ‘cause we’re trying to figure out if we can afford to make that leap to the more efficient cars.”

The bill was amended to allow the tax credit only for the original purchaser of clean vehicles.  Then it passed the committee unanimously.  Now it moves on to the full House.
