Utah now has one case in the national E. coli outbreak. According to Laine McCullough with the Utah Department of Health the patient in Utah was infected while traveling in the Northeastern U.S.
The Utah case is related to the E. coli outbreak from romaine lettuce that originated in Yuma, Arizona. Utah health department officials would not provide other details about the individual who was infected.
Those infected with E. coli will typically kill the infection on their own naturally. It can be fatal on rare occasions with cancer patients, people with HIV or elderly patients who have a harder time fighting off the illness.
According to McCullough, individuals who ate romaine lettuce and are experiencing diarrhea should contact their health care provider.
