Nikole Hannah-Jones | It Starts With You Speaker Series

Kathy Ryan, The New York Times

Nikole Hannah-Jones is a reporter for The New York Times and a contributor to This American Life, and she's spent the last five years investigating the way racial segregation in housing and schools is maintained through official action and policy. She was interviewed by KUER's Education Reporter, Lee Hale, for the second in the three-part It Starts With You Speaker Series on August 29th, 2017 at SLCC's Grand Theatre. She was then joined by panelists to explore the important, and often overlooked effects, that race and natural segregation are having on schools right here in Utah.

KUER and United Way of Salt Lake have partnered for a three-part speaker series, featuring NPR national reporters and local community members to examine and understand the complex issues that divide us as a country and as a community--racism, bigotry, poverty, and more. These deep-dive community conversations are dedicated to creating better understanding and identifying the many ways each of us, as individuals and from whatever roles we hold in our professional and personal lives, can stand up every day for the values of respect, equality, dignity, and inclusion.
