Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill says he’s got a lot of work left to do in the office. That’s why he announced today he’s seeking re-election.
The Democrat says in his last term he jealously guarded taxpayer dollars, balanced four budgets and dramatically reduced annual debt.
“These efficiencies are saving hundreds thousands of dollars each year for the Salt Lake County taxpayer,” Gill says. “Daily we do more with less waste in more efficient ways.”
Gill has also taken on two high-profile investigations -- one into the beleaguered West Valley City Police Department and another into former Utah Attorney General John Swallow, who stepped down from the post in December. Gill, who’s campaigning on the slogan “Nobody is above the law,” says he considered a run for Attorney General.
“There were several offices that colleagues wanted me to consider,” Gill says. “And I really appreciated that trust. But as I said before, when it came down to why I ran the first time and what I want to accomplish for our community, it was an easy decision because what we have started, we want to finish.”
Should Gill retain his seat this November, he’ll serve another four years in office.
Republican Steve Nelson is in line to challenge Gill. He’s the Unit Chief of the Violent Felonies Unit of the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office and a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the federal district court of Utah.
