Minority Achievement in Utah Schools

By Jenny Brundin

Salt Lake City, UT – Across the nation, school superintendents are scrambling to find ways to raise the test scores of minority children. The new focus comes as states have come under increasing scrutiny with the No Child Left Behind Act, that's the federal law mandating that all of the nation's children read and write at grade level by 2014. In Utah, minority groups have used the law to highlight the wide achievement gap that exists between white students and students of color. A Latino advocacy group is filing a lawsuit against the state department of education and the Bush Administration is turning up the heat. KUER's Jenny Brundin reports.
