1975 Incident May Have Lessons for Confronting Today's Pirates

By Dan Bammes

Salt Lake City, UT – In 1975, an American freighter was captured off the coast of Cambodia in an incident that brings to mind the U-S Navy's recent confrontation with pirates off Somalia. Ralph Wetterhahn's book about the seizure of the Mayaguez and the ill-fated attempt to rescue its crew is called The Last Battle: The Mayaguez Incident and the End of the Vietnam War. It ended with three Marines left behind. They are now numbered among the 18 U-S military personnel who died in the operation. Ralph Wetterhahn was an Air Force pilot assigned to help recover the remains of some of the casualties. He spoke to KUER's Dan Bammes.
