District Investigates Weber High Students For Racist Post On Social Media
An Instagram video showing Weber High School students using racial slurs has gone viral, prompting school district officials to investigate.
A spokesman for the Weber School District says the students have been identified as upperclassmen, three of whom are cheerleaders.
The 10-second footage shows five girls in a car, laughing as they repeatedly chant profanity and a racial slur. District officials are probing the circumstances — including who shot the footage, where and why, and how it ended up on social media.
A Weber high football player Tweeted the video after the original post was taken down from the account of one of the girls involved.
"I thought people were better than this especially my so-called 'friends,'" reads the Tweet from @WarriorTy7, which has been shared more than 5,000 times.
According to news outlets, the girls were asked to stay home from school Tuesday as officials investigate and determine possible consequences.
They’re also looking into backmasking — it’s a recording technique in which a message is recorded backward onto a track that is meant to be played forward, and is deliberate.
District technology experts are working to determine that, and officials say they have no timeline for when the probe will wrap.
