The university sent out a text alert shortly before 10 p.m. warning students and faculty to "secure-in-place."
Authorities are searching for suspect Melvin Shawn Rowland, described as a black male, approximately 37 years old, wearing a gray beanie, black pants, white shoes and a white hoodie. He was last seen heading northbound from the medical towers.
Authorities lifted the secure-in-place in an alert sent at 11:45 p.m., stating police believe the suspect has left campus, but warned that the medical towers area should be avoided.
The shooting comes almost a year after the fatal shooting of an international student on campus. On Oct. 30, Austin Boutain shot and killed 23-year-old ChenWei Guo during an attempted carjacking. Boutain pled guilty in September and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
