Salt Lake area Hispanic organizations want to make sure that Latino voters have a voice in this year’s election and a couple of taxi companies are helping to turn that desire into reality.
Beginning today and running through November 6, Las Taxi Aguilas and El Grillito taxi will provide free rides for voters in Salt Lake County. The program is simple. Those wishing to use one of the services should call either El Grillito Taxi at 801-973-8080 or Las Aguilas Taxi at 801-982-1010 and indicate they need a ride to a polling location. A taxi will then come to that person’s home and take them free of charge. Tony Yapillas is a radio host at a local Spanish language station. He says while the program is available for anyone to use, his main goal is to make sure the voice of the Latino community can be heard.
“By having the taxi services help us, help latinos, vote on election day we feel that we’re going to make a difference. We’re going to play an important role on election day,” he says.
Yapillas says he believes that the Latino voice will be most noticed at the local level, especially in the closely contested Salt Lake County mayoral race.
