Herbert Selects Sean Reyes as Next Attorney General of Utah

Newly appointed Attorney Genereal Sean Reyes

Governor Gary Herbert has selected Sean Reyes to be Utah’s next Attorney General. He says all three of the candidates referred to him were qualified for the job, but ultimately it was Sean Reyes’ experience in both the public and private sector that made him the one who would fit best.

“He is eminently qualified for this responsibility and this job and I think it comes at a time that is unique in our state’s history, that’s going to take a unique personality to come in and turn the office around,” Herbert says.

Reyes is a graduate of the Berkeley Law School at the University of California and has won numerous accolades including Utah’s Young Lawyer of the Year. In 2012, he ran against and lost to John Swallow for the Republican nomination for Attorney General. Reyes says it’s been a long two years, but that his enthusiasm for serving in the office has remained the same.

“My vision for what the office can be and should be has not changed," Reyes says. "And that vision is an office that is predicated and built on legal excellence, hard work, and integrity.”

He will be officially sworn into office sometime near the beginning of January. Reyes also says he will be running in next November’s election that will decide the permanent replacement for John Swallow.
