Brian Grimmett/KUER

On Wednesday night, Governor Gary Herbert delivered his 2014 State of the State Address at the Utah Capitol.  The audio of the  speech and our coverage is attached above. Shortly after the address the Utah Democratic Party released a statement reacting to the Governor's speech.  That statement is below:

UTAH DEMOCRATS TO HERBERT: THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS

Salt Lake City – The Utah Democratic Party reacted Wednesday to Governor Gary Herbert’s State of the State, which put forth many themes but gave few concrete details and plans for action.  Utah Democratic Party Executive Director Matt Lyon issued the following statement Wednesday,

“Governor Herbert, where is your plan?  What is your vision?”

“Utah faces many difficult issues, but our governor is just playing in the margins,” Lyon continued.  “To plan for the future we want, we must be detailed, analytical, and strategic today.  Words are nice, but what is the plan for ensuring 60% of Utahns have degrees?  How are we going to improve the devastating achievement gap among our low-income and minority students?  Los Angeles and even Mexico City cleaned their air, but Utah doesn’t have a strategic plan?  How are we going to bring those most in need out of poverty and give them a hand up, not a hand out?”

“Utahns are resourceful, but political rhetoric, lofty speeches, and renaming the state tree doesn't lead to progress.  Yes, Governor, we are a great state, but we need strategy, leadership, and vision to keep it that way.”
